May 2, 2015, Avery and Amelia both received their First Communion. There was plenty of preparation, lots of nerves, and a certain amount of anticipation prior to the actual event, but once the ceremony started everything seemed to fall in place.
But let's digress to the pre-ceremony "we can't miss it" soccer games coached by Shane and played in by the kids. That's right, on the morning of First Communion my entire family hustled to morning games, cheered on each of our little soccer players, rushed back to get dressed for church, and flew to the chapel only to have Avery and Amelia slip into line momentarily before their group entered through the sanctuary doors.
As a parent this is not the way you want the morning of First Communion to go, but when your husband is the dedicated soccer coach of both teams, you are left with little choice. With that being said, I was amazed at the calm and focus present in both Avery and Amelia once the ceremony began and honestly felt inspired to relax and truly take in everything the holy experience had to offer.
During the ceremony both kiddos got up in front of a full crowd and gave a reading with a clear, understandable voice. Neither appeared to be apprehensive about the experience and boldly gave their reading with mature poise.
They were the last to receive communion and both walked back to their pew with smiles and relief on their faces! Since communion is a multi sensory experience we were not surprised when both mentioned the tart taste of wine and the blandness of the wafer.
Our whole experience at Our Lady of Grace has been meaningful and pleasant. We were blessed to have friends introduce us to the parish and knew we would feel at home right away. We are thankful for dedicated teachers and kind parishioners. For a transient, military family like ours this welcoming spirit has made First Communion a profoundly sincere and intimate affair!
