Lucky for me, when I was in 4-H, my mom was our club leader. I had the inside track to everything. I remember 4-H being time consuming, competitive, and fun. As cheesy as it sounds, I think once 4-H is in your blood it is hard to get out. People that show animals understand this more than anything. For these girls, sewing and modeling are their big 4-H pursuits. With homeschooling and our busy lives, helping Amelia and Audrey sew is just not tops of my list. However, we are blessed to have Oma, who is willing to continue the 4-H sewing tradition and every spring spends numerous hours helping Amelia and Audrey create amazing outfits!
This year the girls sewed not just one outfit but two. Oma spent almost two weeks in Omaha helping the girls get their projects done. Amelia made a peplum shirt and pants combo and a floral dress. Audrey made a purple dress and peplum top and pants combo. The hardest part of sewing is getting the outfits to fit just right. After problem solving a couple of sewing challenges, Oma made sure the girls looked sharp in all their outfits! In addition, Oma helped both girls purchase outfits for their Shopping in Style entries. Thank you Oma!!!

Watching the girls help each other out, while franticly scurrying around, is one of my favorite parts of the fashion show competition.

This year for Shopping in Style, we had so many girls dressed in black, they tagged themselves the 'funeral squad'.

After the girls finished modeling for the judges and before the fashion revue began, they were tasked with finding an outfit at the Bargain Box for less than $10. This was a super fun activity for all the girls. In fact, they were talking about their Bargain Box adventure the next day. Audrey found a dress, shoes, and jewelry for $5.50. Amelia found a dress for $3.50. They were able to show off their finds by modeling their purchases at the fashion revue. Liz and I did not go with the girls, so seeing what they found was a fun surprise.
During the fashion show, they invite the younger members of the audience up on stage for a chance to strut their stuff. After watching the girls practice their modeling skills all week, Aggie was more than willing to hop on stage and take a few turns.
After COVID last year, participation numbers are still low this year. There were only 40 outfits modeled. I'll be anxious to see if this is the new trend. Next year will certainly be a telling year.
Although she did not earn a trip to the State Fair, Amelia won Champion Intermediate Model for STEAM 2 in her blue floral dress.
