December Roundup

1.  Over our Christmas break we decided to ring for the Salvation Army as our "give back" cause for the year.  This was a new venture for our family and a very gratifying experience for everyone.  The kids danced, sang in Latin, and greeted everyone with a bright and cheery "Merry Christmas"!  It was a beautiful December day and they earned over $120 after ringing for two hours, counting every cent as it went in.

2.  For the past three years we have headed to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts to watch "A Christmas Carol".  This year we went with our neighbors and shared the experience with people we enjoy.  The story is such a heart warming story for the Christmas season, but the Denver show itself is awesome!  We all agree that Mrs. Fezziwig steals the show, that Jacob Marely still scares us when he jumps out from the stage floor, and that Ebenezer has a charmingly dry sense of humor adding a personalized touch to the Denver show.  After three years the kids are starting to really understand the show and see this as a Christmas tradition they can look forward to.  We do hope Omaha has a show as pleasing as this one.

3.  Christmas break just wouldn't be Christmas break without a few movies and some smores at the Broadmoor. The girls loved Ferdinand!

Bowling at the Broadmoor

Over Christmas break we headed to the Broadmoor for some bowling, food, and smores.  Bowling at the Broadmoor was on our Colorado Springs bucket list.  This was totally a fun pre-Christmas activity and definitely my type of bowling, as there was awesome food, only 6 lanes, not overly crowded, and a relaxing atmosphere.  Aggie was entertained the whole time, but especially loved the air blowing up from the bowling ball return median.  The kids enjoyed the bowling experience but I think really enjoyed the food (pork belly tacos, tuna tartar, caprese salad, gourmet burgers, and churros).  The Broadmoor is such a beautiful hotel, but it is especially beautiful over Christmas!

Thanksgiving Fun!

This past Thanksgiving we went back to Nebraska to spend time with Oma and Opa.  The weather was gorgeous and perfect for a little holiday getaway.  The kids spent plenty of time outdoors playing with the animals, riding the 4-wheeler, and making bike jumps.  We celebrated Thanksgiving with plenty of comfort foods and Shane was in heaven taking full advantage.  The girls made cute name cards in the shape of foxes to decorate the Thanksgiving table while Avery played pinball in the basement.  We added a pie contest to our Thanksgiving festivities this year and had fun competing as well as sampling competitors pies.  Avery and Oma baked a berry pie;  Amelia, Opa, and Shane baked a caramel apple pie; and Audrey and myself baked a bourbon pumpkin pie.  The winner was the caramel apple pie, second place berry pie, and third bourbon pumpkin pie, although all places were separated by just one vote!

Birthday Fun and Baklava

On Audrey's birthday we went out to get our nails painted.  This is without fail a fun activity because Audrey's birthday party with Santa is always so close, and painted nails add to the anticipation of the festivities.

Additionally, we made Baklava for Audrey's birthday party with Santa.  Most of the party goers weren't interested in trying the Baklava but a brave few did give a whirl.  Whatever the case we had fun making the Baklava and enjoyed the pieces we did have.  Baklava has a reputation for being a labor intensive dessert.  However, besides layers the phyllo dough, none of us found the process overly challenging.  We are definitely adding this to our Christmas Tradition list for next year.  Baklava just screams "Christmas" and mixed with a birthday party including Santa is the "cats meow"!

Audrey's 8th Birthday - Things I want to remember

Dearest Audrey Estelle-

You are one sweet little girl!  How I love your smile, hugs, and good natured personality.  I will always think of you as my "baby," even with Aggie Rose in the mix, because you were my "baby" for so long.  Watching you grow has been a great source of delight because you seem to enjoy every new stage, from starting piano to playing a new sport.  With an upcoming move this next year I dread the thought of putting you into full time school the most.  Somehow, having you at home and getting to enjoy and savor "you" has been a privilege I'm not quite ready to let go of.  You are a go with the flow kind-of gal and fit in this family so perfectly that when you are not around it's very obvious.  You are always excited for your birthday and sincerely love every phone call, card, gift, and birthday wish you receive.  This past birthday, since you are a December baby, you chose an "egg nog" cake as your birthday cake.  We made your cake together and the family enjoyed every last morsel!  Your brother and sister made you birthday presents, both of which you liked, but your  sister's barbie furniture, made out of legos, may have been a highlight.  Birthday's come and go and here is a list of things I want to remember about you at this stage in your life.

1.  You started piano for the first time this year.  When you practice you almost always sing.  I love hearing her sweet little voice while you practice piano.

2.  You are a very "agreeable" child and because of this you are liked by many schoolmates and neighborhood friends.  However, because you are agreeable, those with dominate personalities try to take advantage of your good nature.  Finding a good balance between being  "agreeable" and "assertive" has not been easy.

3.  Lady is still your favorite stuffy and is definitely showing signs of many years of loving.

4.  Eating food has always been a slow process for yourself, However, you are willing to try new things, like a piece of your brother's octopus, from a recent restaurant venture.  This I am thankful for, as enjoying "culture" always seems to be tied to food.

5.  Recently you have been joining Avery and Amelia in dad's "basketball workouts", which none of you look forward to.  However, you have an upbeat outlook on life and willing go, participate, and try to improve.

6.  I am always amazed at how well you are able to get your school work done, without being micromanaged by myself.  I really don't have to remind you to get homework done and rarely need to help you with schoolwork.  Honestly, you are a homeschoolers dream.  Thank you!

7.  Amelia and you have a special bond.  Both of you can play hours in your room with barbies or calico critters.  If there is something new to try Amelia always wants you to try with her.  Your presence gives Amelia comfort.

8.  You are the only sibling willing to play Legos with Avery.  If he has some alone time he almost always asks you if you want to play Legos.  Avery loves having a building buddy.

9.  I something laugh at how you chase Aggie Rose around the house.  You chase her because you are worried about her.  Your concern is always for her safety.

10.  You have some awesome neighborhood friends!  You play outside for hours with Avery, Amelia, Jane, and Charlotte.  In fact, you have spent many lunches and dinners at either Jane and Charlotte's house.  You are already sad about moving, as you will miss these girls.
